From the front this looked like a fairly standard memorial - then we looked around the side!

"Here lies William Jones, draper, and wife Elianora. He died 13th July 1612".

Shrewsbury Abbey, Shrewsbury, Shropshire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

The Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, commonly known as Shrewsbury Abbey, was a Benedictine monastery founded in 1083 by the Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery. A large amount of the monastery was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, but a number of buildings, including the church were left intact.

The sad story of three brothers.

St Michael and All Angels, Bishops Cleeve, Gloucestershire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

Bishop’s Cleeve is known to have had a monastery church ( a “Minster”) at least since at least the 8th century because it is mentioned in The Mercian King Offa’s Charter. The current church largely dates from around 1170. The Church Guide sees is as “Transitional” (that is, influenced by both Norman and Early English gothic), although Norman predominates. There are two Norman turrets at the west end, something we would not see on a purely parish (as opposed to monastic) church.

The mason has engarved "dilligence" instead of "diligence".

St Mary the Virgin, Bishops Frome, Herefordshire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

This church has its origins in the late 12th century although the tower is late 14th century. The Chancel was rebuilt in 1847 and the nave and aisle were rebuilt in 1861-2 by F.R. Kempson.

For years I have been looking for somebody who was born or died on the same day as I was born. This is the closest I have found.

 St Paul, Tupsley, Hereford, Herefordshire

The church had a surprisingly large churchyard behind it. It was nice to see so many people around - even if it was only parents taking their young children to and from a local school.

What is the significance of these three dates? Birth, baptism and death perhaps?

St Mary the Virgin, Stoke Edith, Hereford, Herefordshire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

The tower is 14th century but the recessed needle spire dates to the 17th century. The spire was capped in 1940.

The nave and chancel were rebuilt between 1740 and 1743 by Henry Flitcroft.

We have only seen the word "spinster" used twice on a gravestone.

St Philip and St James, Tarrington, Herefordshire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

A Norman church restored during the Victorian period. Several pieces of original medieval stained glass remain. Two windows in the north wall of the chancel have been identified as late Saxon or early Norman. The blocked up north door is Norman in style, with a rounded Romanesque arch.

We have only seen the word "spinster" used twice on a gravestone. This is strange because widow and relict are widely used.

William and Sarah Deem lost William Herbert and Mary in infancy and another five of their children didn't reach the age of 21.

St John the Baptist, Yarkhill, Herefordshire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

It is believed that there has been a church on this spot for more than 800 years although most of what can now be seen is the result of extensive renovations carried out in 1862. Parts of the original building can be seen in the porch and the bottom of the tower is of the same 13th century period.

Allan Whitney was drowned in New Zealand in 1891. He was only 22 years old.

 St Nicholas, Norton Canon, Herefordshire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

Very little remains of the old church, except for the 13th century tower which has 5 bells but the stone piscina kept in the vestry indicates an even earlier foundation. The nave, chancel and porch were re-built in 1706 and further restoration took place in 1868-1869.
