A Victorian building set within ancient Celtic circular Llan churchyard. This church has been re-ordered in recent years to provide many modern facilities.

A husband and wife died together in an air crash on a commercial flight.

PROBABLE CAUSE: "The Commission is of the opinion that the accident occurred following a collision with the mountainside, which resulted directly from a series of errors on the part of the crew (failure to use all the means of radio navigation available in the aircraft, error in dead reckoning, descent starting from a point which had been inadequately identified, failure to observe the safe altitudes fixed on the company's flight plan and, perhaps, mistakes in identification by visual reference to the ground.) This irrational conduct of the flight can be explained by the phenomena due to intoxication by carbon monoxide coming from a defective heating system. Finally, it should be stressed that the misunderstandings which occurred between the aircraft and the Perpignan controller, as a result of language difficulties and in particular the non-existence of any standard phraseology, and also the failure to check the aircraft's magnetic bearing by means of the D/F equipment during the communication at 20.55hrs, may have constituted additional aggravating circumstances."

A general view - The Church was formed in 1766 and the first chapel was built in 1792, with a hipped roof. When the Baptist chapel was rebuilt at Nantgwyn in 1877, bricks of contrasting colour were used, to give the impression of Classical pillars.

There were a number of these curious objects scattered throughout the churchyard. Neither Claire nor I have ever seen anything like them before.

John Richards was 1 of 35 killed in the Whitwick Colliery Disaster.

 St Andrew, Thringstone, Leicestershire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

The Parish Church of Saint Andrew, Thringstone is a small cruciform structure built in 1862 from the designs of James Piers St Aubyn of London, the eminent Victorian church architect and restorer. The plan is unusual, having a broad nave with shallow transepts, a round-ended sanctuary and a round-ended vestry on its north side.

John Richards was killed in the Whitwick Colliery Disaster. This happened on 19 April 1898 in Whitwick Number Five Pit and resulted in the deaths of thirty five men.

A father and his three sons all died of a "Violent Fever" in the space of six weeks in 1803.

St John the Baptist, Whitwick, Leicestershire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

The parish church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient structure, nestling in a natural amphitheatre, close to the confluence of two streams. A spring, emanating from under the chancel, is also discharged into the watercourse, through a piped outlet protruding from a stone wall at the east end of the churchyard. The church we see today is mainly of 14th-century construction, with only the south doorway seeming to go back to the 13th century.

This early 13th century church was altered and extended over the next 200 years. It was rebuilt (except for the west tower) from 1846 - 50, by R C Carpenter for Thomas Thorp, Archdeacon of Bristol. The tower was restored in 1879.

"The spirit has returned to God who gave it".

St Michael, Stretton en le Field, Leicestershire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

The village's church, St Michael's, was constructed in the 14th century in an elevated position in the village; although it is currently redundant and not used for regular services, it remains a consecrated building: it is Grade II* Listed and is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. It is considered historically valuable as (with the exception of new box pews in the 18th century) the church has remained almost unchanged since medieval times.

Appleby's parish church dates back to the early 14th century, although it is likely that there was a church on this site from Saxon times. As Appleby nestles in its valley, its tall spire is visible from every direction.

 St Idloes, Llanidloes, Powys, Wales
(Click on an image for a larger version)

The parish church of Llanidloes is dedicated to St Idloes, a seventh century saint about whom very little is known. His feast is celebrated on September 6th and this church is the only one in his dedication. Three manuscripts testify he was the son of Gwyddnabi ab Llawfrodedd who was a red-bearded knight.
