Neither Ship, Passengers, nor Crew have since been heard of."

St Mary, Ross on Wye, Herefordshire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

The church was originally founded by Robert de Betun, Bishop of Hereford, in the 13th century. The church, in its current form, was dedicated in 1316. There is evidence that suggests that there was a Saxon and Norman church there before the current one was built. The spire towers 205 feet into the air and dates back to the 14th century but was rebuilt in 1721 and repaired in 1852, 1911 and 1952.

The first Earl Somers, died 1855. A freestone chest in trefoiled arcading all set in a depressed arched niche.

St John the Baptist, Eastnor, Herefordshire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

It is believed there has been a church building at Eastnor on the present site since the 12th Century, though it is possible that an earlier wooden Saxon church building would have existed somewhere in the area. There was certainly a Saxon church building at Ledbury, just over two miles away.

Arthur Sculthorpe was totally deaf and blind for the last 35 years of his life.

The Cathedral Church of St Peter, St Paul and St Andrew, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

Peterborough Cathedral is known for its imposing Early English Gothic West Front (façade) which, with its three enormous arches, is without architectural precedent and with no direct successor. The appearance is slightly asymmetrical, as one of the two towers that rise from behind the façade was never completed (the tower on the right as one faces the building), but this is only visible from a distance.

The white marble effigy of the 3rd Earl of Hardwicke (1757-1834).

 St Andrew, Wimpole, Cambridgeshire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

St Andrew is a dramatic example of what happens when a noble family entirely dominates a village. There was a medieval church here, surrounded by a little medieval village, but little of it now exists: Only a small side chapel remains, and even that has been restored almost out of all recognition. The rest of the church is a rebuilding of 1749.

(Click on an image for a larger version)

Ely Cathedral, has its origins in 672AD when St Etheldreda built an Abbey Church. The present building dates back to 1083, and cathedral status was granted it in 1109. Until the reformation it was the Church of St Etheldreda and St Peter, at which point it was refounded as the Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity, continuing as the principal church of the Diocese of Ely.

Lieutenant Thomas Orde Lawder Wilkinson was an English-born Canadian and British Army officer who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross

 St Andrew, Quatt, Shropshire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

General view

Lieutenant Thomas Orde Lawder Wilkinson VC (29 June 1894 - 5 July 1916), was an English-born Canadian and British Army officer who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. On 5 July 1916 at La Boiselle, France, during an attack, when a party of men from another unit were retiring without their machine-gun, Lieutenant Wilkinson with two of his men, got the gun into action and held up the enemy until relieved. Later he forced his way forward during a bombing attack and found four or five men from different units stopped by a wall of earth over which the enemy was throwing bombs. He at once mounted the machine-gun on top of the parapet and dispersed the bombers. Subsequently, in trying to bring in a wounded man, he was killed. As his body was never recovered intact, Wilkinson is commemorated with thousands of other British and Commonwealth soldiers on the British Memorial to the Missing at Thiepval.

Built between 1084 and 1504, Worcester Cathedral represents every style of English architecture from Norman to Perpendicular Gothic. It is famous for its Norman crypt and unique chapter house, As it is surrounded by secular buildings it is very difficult to photograph.

The white marble monument in Baroque style to James Scudamore who died in 1668.

 St Cuthbert, Holme Lacy, Herefordshire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

St Cuthbert's Church is a redundant Anglican church about 1 mile to the southeast of the village of Holme Lacy, Herefordshire. The church is now in an isolated position, but earthworks in its vicinity suggest that a village existed nearby, which subsequently became deserted. The fabric of the present church originates from the 13th century. The tower was added in the 14th century, and a north chapel and south porch followed in the 16th century.

On the north wall of the chancel is the white marble monument in Baroque style to James Scudamore who died in 1668. It contains a sculpture representing James Scudamore in a sitting position, wearing Roman dress. Above his head are two cherubs, and the whole is framed between two pilasters.
