A charming statue to remember a little boy.

Hereford Cemetery and Crematorium, Hereford, Herefordshire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

It took the two of us 4 hours to check every grave. This is a well-run site and the grounds with neatly mown grass and attractively presented flower beds were a credit to all concerned. We strongly approve of their policy of providing detailed maps of the site and plenty of benches for visitors to sit on

Robert Muriel was a Surgeon and Apothecary who was "prematurely cut off by a brain fever".

Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity, Ely, Cambridgeshire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

Ely Cathedral, has its origins in 672AD when St Etheldreda built an Abbey Church. The present building dates back to 1083, and cathedral status was granted it in 1109. Until the reformation it was the Church of St Etheldreda and St Peter, at which point it was refounded as the Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity, continuing as the principal church of the Diocese of Ely.

Gracilla, the wife of Salib Claudius, died at sea in 1909.

St Philip and St James, Tarrington, Herefordshire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

A Norman church restored during the Victorian period. Several pieces of original medieval stained glass remain. Two windows in the north wall of the chancel have been identified as late Saxon or early Norman. The blocked up north door is Norman in style, with a rounded Romanesque arch.

The church had a surprisingly large churchyard behind it. It was nice to see so many people around - even if it was only parents taking their young children to and from a local school.

I think the monumental mason had a few problems!

St Michael and All Angels, Bishops Cleeve, Gloucestershire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

Bishop’s Cleeve is known to have had a monastery church ( a “Minster”) at least since at least the 8th century because it is mentioned in The Mercian King Offa’s Charter. The current church largely dates from around 1170. The Church Guide sees is as “Transitional” (that is, influenced by both Norman and Early English gothic), although Norman predominates. There are two Norman turrets at the west end, something we would not see on a purely parish (as opposed to monastic) church.

It must be almost unique for a town cemetery to be in a different country to the town it serves. Presteigne Cemetery is in England and Presteigne is in Wales.

I wish I could find out the whole story behing the stark words.

 Oswestry Cemetery, Oswestry, Shropshire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

It took us a total of 6 man-hours to survey this cemetery on a lovely sunny day.

Sometimes you read a memorial that really leaves you wishing that you could find out the whole story behing the stark words. Mary Jane Elizabeth Keegan died in August 1910 and her daughter Eleanor Marguerite Keegan died, aged 12, in April 1911. Were the two events connected?

Medicine has been written as medecine. Oh dear.

 Wellington Cemetery, Wellington, Shropshire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

The cemetery was much larger than it looked from the front gate and it seemed strange to us that there wasn't any signpost on the main road indicating where the cemetery was located. Without a detailed map of the area visitors would really struggle to find it.

Mary Harrison died in church.

St John the Baptist, Wolverley, Worcestershire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

This church was memorable because it was the site of our first "equipment failure" - our camera stopped working half way though our visit and we had to return a few weeks later after it had been repaired.

Mary Harrison died in church. Polished tablets like this are extremely hard to photograph, Claire sighs every time she is given the job!
