Barbara "for many years cared for the flowers in both churches".

 St Eadburgha, Broadway, Worcestershire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

St Eadburgha's Church has been a Christian place of worship since Saxon times. The dedication is rare and denotes a strong link with Alfred the Great's grand-daughter who as a child was offered jewels or a Bible as a gift, she chose the latter and dedicated her life to the service of God. The present cruciform church dates back to the XII century and contains some fine medieval and Jacobean woodwork.

A church of many periods, with only the 14th century lias stone tower remaining from the medieval building. The spire was added in 1826. The nave was entirely rebuilt in 1786 and is very light and airy. The chancel was extended in 1870 and its interior is much darker, emphasising the differences between churches of the 18th and 19th centuries.

In 1846 the Hornyold family funded the building of a Catholic church in Hanley Swan. Our Lady and St Alphonsus, with adjoining presbytery, was built on land donated by Thomas Charles Hornyold and was paid for by his nephew John Vincent Gandolfi-Hornyold at a cost of £30,000 (£2m today).

It was designed in the Gothic Revival style by the architect Charles Hansom, whose brother designed Birmingham Town Hall and also the Hansom cab. The furnishings, including a fine tiled floor made by Mintons, were by the architect and designer A W Pugin.

An unusual cricket-themed gravestone.

 St Mary, Hanley Castle, Worcestershire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

The present church was founded in the 12th century using Roman bricks and Saxon stone in its construction, but the only remaining Norman feature is the south doorway. Extended soon after 1300, it retains 14th century nave windows and the north aisle. The original tower was damaged during the Civil War and was replaced by a massive brick tower with battlements in 1674, when the east end was rebuilt under the patronage of the Lechmere family of Severn End. They again rescued the church from decay in 1858 by funding a major restoration, including the installation of stained glass and Minton tiles. The tower contains a peal of six bells all originally cast by Abraham Rudhall of Gloucester in 1699; they were last recast and tuned in 1929.

The bronze coloured metal has been used to create an effective and eye-catching design.

St Andrew, Hampton, Evesham, Worcestershire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

The plan of St Andrew's is unique among churches in the Vale of Evesham, and suggests an original Norman foundation. The present building dates as a whole from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. The porch was added a little later. The masonry is original, except for the re-facing of the East wall in 1900, and the addition in 1904, of the North Aisle, now used as the vestry and organ space. The two diagonal buttresses at the East end, and the crosses on the East and West gables are modern.

Susan and Nora were twins who died aged 7 days and 9 days.

 St Anne, Wyre Piddle, Worcestershire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

Wyre Piddle is a chapelry in the original parish of Fladbury. When the church was restored in 1888/9 the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Buildings remarked “Wyre Piddle is fortunate in possessing one of the now scarce examples of the original type of English, we might almost say British, churches. The simple square cell for the altar with its narrow entrance and the equally simple but rather larger shelter for the congregation was the earliest for the Parish Church in England. Successive enlargements have in most places destroyed or all but effaced the remains of this simple plan. At Wyre Piddle it is still unchanged after perhaps eight centuries.”

Susan and Nora were twins who died aged 7 days and 9 days.
