Confederate Memorial - Arlington National Cemetery

By the end of 1901 all the Confederate soldiers buried in the national cemeteries at Alexandria, Virginia, and at the Soldiers' Home in Washington were brought together with the soldiers buried at Arlington and reinterred in the Confederate section. There are 46 officers, 351 enlisted men, 58 wives, 15 southern civilians, and 12 unknowns in concentric circles around the Confederate Monument.

To further honor these citizens of the South, the United Daughters of the Confederacy petitioned to erect a major monument to the Confederate dead. On March 4, 1906 Secretary of War William Howard Taft granted their request. Chosen to design the memorial was the world-renowned sculptor, Moses Ezekiel. Ezekiel brought more than just his artistic talents to this project for he was also a Confederate veteran who knew first-hand the horrors of the Civil War. He is now buried at the base of the famous monument which he created.

St Mary Magdalene's Church is a redundant Anglican church in the grounds of Croome Court, at Croome D'Abitot, Worcestershire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

The original church at Croome was demolished by the 6th Earl of Coventry when he decided to replace his adjacent Jacobean house in the 1750s. Opulent monuments brought from the old church long since demolished, show the former Barons and Earls of Coventry.

To the right side of the altar is a black and white marble memorial to Thomas Coventry, 1st Baron Coventry, who died in 1640 and who had been Lord Keeper of the Great Seal. His effigy is shown reclining between statues personifying Justice, holding the Great Seal, and Virtue.

Apart from the 15th century west tower, the church was rebuilt in 1871-2. The original 12th century chancel arch is now the main churchyard entrance.

A 12th century church with a 15th century tower. Additions were made in the 1830s and restoration took place in 1887.

Bredon's Norton Church dates from the 12th century but was heavily restored by the Victorians. It was built as a Chapel of Ease for the main Parish Church of St Giles, Bredon.

The Normans began the present church, around 1180, and work continued until the middle of the 13th century. It seems possible that stonemasons who were at that time working on the great Abbey of Tewkesbury were called in to lend a hand in the construction of Bredon Church. Certainly the two external turrets at the west end and those at Tewkesbury Abbey have a marked resemblance.

An incorrect symbol used on a military medical grave

It is relatively common, especially in the United States, to find the caduceus, with its two snakes and wings, used as a symbol of medicine instead of the correct Rod of Asclepius, with only a single snake. This example can be found on McPherson Drive near the Confederate Memorial.

The parish church of Saint Mary the Virgin was consecrated in 1331. It has a small western bell tower with a spire and three bells. The oldest was cast in 1623 by Godwin Baker of Worcester, the next by Henry Bagley of Chacombe in 1665 and the last by Abraham Rudhall of Gloucester in 1718. The church was restored in 1868 and a vestry was added in 1900, but its original 14th-century form is largely unchanged.

Bruton Parish Church is located in the restored area of Colonial Williamsburg in Williamsburg. It was established in 1674 by the consolidation of two previous parishes in the Virginia Colony, and remains an active Episcopal parish.

Charles Figgat

Charles M. Figgat was the cashier at the Bank of Lexington who embezzled over $145,000 and fled on February 14, 1895. Figgat's actions forced the closure of the bank and adversely affected the local economy; VMI incurred significant losses.
